Respiratory System Flashcards
3 types of respiration
Cellular, internal and external
What are pulmonary capillaries?
Vessels carrying blood around alveoli
Define cellular respiration
Metabolizing fats, carbs proteins to form ATP
Define role of mucous
It lowers surface pressure of liquids to allow easier spreading and traps particles breathed in
Define role of cilia
Protects lungs by moving particle laiden mucous towards oesophagus to be coughed out or swallowed
Septum is
Cartilage dividing the irregular nasal cavity
What’s a nasal concha/turbinate
Traps water in nose when exhaling and increases surface area
How does nose condition air?
It filters it with hairs (larger particles) lined by mucous membrane & capillaries
Also cilia for smaller particles
Concha spin air To encourage particles to be trapped in it
5 nasal functions
1) smell-olfactory receptors
2) filter air (small and big hairs), small ones called cilia and concha are spinning to encourage particles to be trapped in mucous.
3) humidification- mucous is wet
4)sneezing when mucous becomes irritated
5) warming air-strong vascular IRT of mucosa
Paranasal sinuses location
Cranial and facial bones and lining is continuous with nasal mucosa lining
Frontal, ethmoid, & maxillary
4 functions sinuses
1) moisten/humidify air
2) resonance to voice
3) lighten cranial structure
4) drain tears from eyes via nasolacrimal ducts
Pharynx location
Straight muscular tube connecting nose/throat
Pharynx parts
1) nasalpharynx
2)oropharynx
3)layngopharynx
4) Eustachian tubes
7 functions pharynx
1) the route which air and food enter
2) warm and humidify
3) taste
4) hearing
5) equalization of pressure in middle ear (Eustachian tube)
6) immune protection (speech)
7) voice (resonating chamber)
Larynx (voicebox “loud Larry”) functions)
1) speech box produces voice
2) mouth structures allow speech
3) epiglottis protects lungs from food
4) pathway for air to go to and from lungs
5) warm and humidify
