respiratory system Flashcards
Larynx
Air passes through here during breathing. The vocal cords can be made to vibrate, producing sound.
Trachea
Tube that carries air towards the lungs. C shaped rings of cartilage prevent the trachea collapsing during inhalation.
Bronchus
First branch from the trachea, leading to both lungs.
Bronchiole
Fine branch leading into the alveoli.
Alveoli
Where gas exchange takes place. Has a learned surface area in total.
Rib
Keeps the lungs protected
Diaphragm
Draws air in and out of the lung and its a muscle.
Mucus
Substance produced to collect and catch dust, smoke particles, bacteria and other.
Goblet cells
They produce mucus.
Ciliated cell
They provide transport to mucus and and they protect the airway.
Cilia
Move microbes and debris up and out of the airway. (Mucus)
External intercostal muscles
Small muscles located in between each rib. The motions of these muscles assist the lungs by raising the ribs and expanding the chest cavity.
Internal intercostal muscles
muscles of respiration, displace the ribs and thereby to alter the configuration of the rib cage
