B3 Biological molecules Flashcards
Carbohydrates
They are sugar molecules and one of the 3 main nutrients found in food
Fats
Fats means any ester of fatty acids, or a mixture of such compounds
Proteins
A molecule made up of amino acids. Proteins are needed for the body to function properly
Starch
A substance found in plants. It contains sugar molecules joined chemically. It is found in high levels in foods such as potatoes, rice, corn, and wheat
Glycogen
a substance deposited in bodily tissues as a store of carbohydrates. It is a polysaccharide which forms glucose on hydrolysis
Amino acids
Amino acids are molecules that combine to form proteins
Fatty acids
atty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat
Iodine solution
Iodine solution Is to test if starch is present in the solution or thing
Benedict’s solution
Benedict’s solution Is to test if reducing sugars are present in the solution or thing
Biuret test
Biuret Test is to check if proteins are present
Ethanol emulsion test
Ethanol emulsion test Is to see if fats and oils are present
Solvent
The liquid in which something dissolves to make a solution
Solution
A mixture of two or more elements which is usually dissolved
Solute
The solid being dissolved in the solvent
Vitamins
vitamins help you resist infections and keep your nerves healthy, while others may help your body get energy from food or help your blood clot properly
