Respiratory system Flashcards
What does the nasal cavity do?
- filters
- warms
- moistens air before it goes to lungs
What is the function of the trachea?
Carries air from nasal cavity to lungs
C shaped cartilage rings keep it open
Pleural membrane
Thin layers that reduce friction between the lungs and the inside of the chest wall
Lungs
Organ- provides pathway to allow oxygen into the body and remove CO2 from the body
Bronchi
Carries air fromtrachea into bronchioles- 2 branches - left ( enters left lung)and right bronchi ( enters right lung)
Rib
- Specialised bones
- protects organs in chest
- assists in respiration by pulling the lungs up
4.provides support for upper body
Intercostal muscle
Muscles that assist inhalation and exhalation by moving ribs up and down
Alveoli
where gas exchange occurs
Diaphragm
Big muscle
Inhalation- contracts-flattens- moves down chest cavity bigger
Exhalation- relaxes-moves up, chest cavity smaller
Alveoli features
What is diffusion?
