What is digestion?
It is the breaking up of large insoluble food molecules into small soluble food molecules.
What are the two types of digestion?
Mechanical digestion and chemical digestion.
What is mechanical digestion?
Where muscles are involved in a physical process eg) Chewing, Peristalsis, Stomach churning e.t.c.
What is chemical digestion?
Chemical digestion involves enzymes.
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a molecule (protein) that speeds up a reaction (catalyst).
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction.
What are the seven food components for a balanced diet?
Protein
Carbohydrates
Fats (Lipids)
Fibre
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Where are proteins found?
Meats, fish, pulses, tofu, insects
Where are fats found?
Oils, avacado, red meat, butter, cheese, milk
Where is fibre found?
Brown rice, brown bread, porridge, cereals, weetabix, fruits
Where are vitamins found?
Fruit, vegetables, red meat, seeds, plant oils
Where are mineral ions found?
Certain meats, vegetables, fruits, supplements, salts
What is the name and function of this organ:
The name of this organ is the oesophagus. The function of the oesophagus is linking the mouth to the stomach.
What is the function of the rectum
Undigested food is stored here as faeces and is led to the anus.
What is the name and function of this organ:
The name of the organ is the mouth. Digestion starts here where the teeth break the food down and mix the food with saliva. Saliva has enzymes that can break down specific foods.
