Respiratory system Flashcards
What 2 factors can affect whether oxygen may be taken up by haemoglobin
PH Level (acidity of the blood) and Carbon Dioxide Level
What is Pulmonary Circulation
Pulmonary circulation moves blood between the heart and the lungs.
It transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs to absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. The oxygenated blood then flows back to the heart.
What is Systemic Circulation
Systemic circulation moves blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
It sends oxygenated blood out to cells and returns deoxygenated blood to the heart.
What is the function of the conducting zone?
This is the area from the nose/mouth to the terminal bronchioles. Its function is to warm, humidify air and trap
particles in the air
What are located on the surface of the alveoli and what is their function?
Macrophages are located on the surface of the alveoli and they remove debris from the air
There are two factors that affect the rate of diffusion in the lungs. What are they and how can they affect the rate.
The thickness of the membrane around the alveoli. The thicker it is the slower the rate of diffusion. The surface area of the alveoli, as any reduction in the surface area will reduce the rate
