Respiratory System Flashcards
The respiratory system is everything you use to breathe and it is found in the chest cavity (Chest Area)
.
Air passes through the nose or mouth then onto the trachea
.
The trachea splits into two tubes called bronchi one going into each lung
.
The bronchi splits into progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles
.
The bronchioles finally end at small bags called alveoli where gaseous exchange occurs
.
The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles help air to move in and out
.
When you breathe in the diaphragm ad external intercostal muscles contract to move the ribcage upwards and expand the chest
.
The you breathe out the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax moving the ribcage down and shrinking the chest. This forces air out of the lungs
.
Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide are exchanged in the Alveoli
.
The Cardiovascular and respiratory system have to work together to get oxygen to the muscles and carbon dioxide out of them
.
The Cardiovascular and Respiratory system do this by exchanging gases between the alveoli and capillaries surrounding them
.
Oxygen from the air you breathe into the lungs moves across from the alveoli to the red blood cells int the capillaries
.
The Alveoli is surrounded by lots of capillaries which gives them a large blood supply to exchange gases
.
The Alveoli have a large surface area, they are moist and have thin walls so gases can pass through them easily
.
The Process if the gases moving across is called diffusion which means the gases move down a concentration gradient
.
