Respiratory System Flashcards
Which areas of the body have the best restorative abilities?
the liver and the tunicas
What type of cartilage is in the trachea?
hyaline. And it’s lined with cilia and mucous
In type 2 diabetes, describe the pH of the blood and what medicine could be administered to help
Too much acid (acidosis) and bicarbonate can be administered as medicine
What innervates the diaphragm?
The phrenic nerve
What innervates the intercostals?
The neural plexus
Describe what would happen if the heart’s aortic bodies detected up too much acidity?
Respiratory muscles would be stimulated to increase ventilation rate to get rid of excess CO2
What is happening in an asthma attack?
Acute onset of inflammmation/enlargement of muscles in bronchioles caused by cold weather, anxiety, etc
How many alveoli are there per lung?
About 300 million
What happens to the diaphragm when it contracts?
It flattens
Describe pneumonia
The plasma coming from capillaries compresses the alveoli, leaving very little space for air exchange.
What can prevent pneumonia while under care?
Getting the patient deep breathing- it activates the aeriolar macrophages
What is COPD?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: toxins break down walls of alveoli which decrease surface area for gas exchange. I.e. emphysema
