What is respiration?
A
the exchange of gasses between an organism and its environment.

What are the two types of respiration?
A
-External: the exchange of gasses between the alveoli and the extensive capillary
network within the lungs
- internal: the exchange of gasses between the capillary bed and the tissues those
capillary beds supply

What are the two basic functional structures the respiratory system divided into?
A
- The conducting portiong and the respiratory portion

What is the conducting portion?
A
- it involves the nasal cavity which contains the external nasal vestibule and the nasa fossa as well as the septum.
- It includes the pharynx and then the larynx, the treachea and the mainstem bronchi, secondary and tertiary bronchi. and then all the way to bronchiole.

What type of epithelial tissue forms the resperatory epthilium of the nasal cavity and larger bronchi?
A
- consists of pseudostratified columnar epthelium and there are about 5 distinct cell types:
- ciliated columnar cell
- goblet cell
- brush cell
- Basal (short) cells
- Small granule cells
