Respiratory Revision Flashcards
Explain Inhalation.
The intercostal and diaphragm contract, expanding the chest cavity and allowing the lungs to expand. Air is pulled into the lungs.
Explain Expiration.
Intercostal and Diaphragm relax, the chest and lungs recoil, the air is pushed out due to increased pressure within the lungs.
What is the air flow through the respiratory tract?
Nose - Trachea - Bronchus - Bronchiole - Aveoli.
Alveolar Adaptations for gas exchange?
- Close blood supply
- One cell thick
- Large Surface area
- Moist
Chemical that increases during exercise?
CO2
Receptors that detect CO2?
Chemo - Receptors
Respiratory Centre of the brain?
Medulla
Muscles that contract?
Intercostal and diaphragm.
Description of Asthma?
Inflammation of the bronchus, preventing air from reaching the lungs. Causing shortness of breath.
Triggers of Asthma?
Cold weather, exercise, air pollution, dust and animal hairs.
Predisposing factors for asthma?
-Family history
-Environmental/pollution
-Pre-existing condition like allergies
-Smoking
Category for Asthma?
Immune Disorder
Describe the protective mechanisms for the respiratory tract?
- Cillia moves dust particles away from the lungs.
- Mucus traps dust preventing them from reaching lung tissue.
