respiratory medicine Flashcards
What is bronchopneumonia and what aetiology/epidemiology does it normally have?
diffuse patchy pneumonia of the lung parenchyma, it can affect discontinuous areas and normally the small airways e.g. bronchioles and respiratory bronchioles. This is the most common type of pneumonia to present and is often seen in the old or very young, or those with immunocompromise. Causative agents are varied but tend to be strep pneumoniae, haemophilus, staph aureus etc.
What is lobar pneumonia and what aetiology/epidemiology does it normally have?
consolidation of whole lobe or part of lung, continuous and contained. This is less common and is most likely to be community acquired. This is most likely to be caused by strep pneumoniae, haemophilus or moraxella cattharalis
Name some atypical causes of pneumonia.
chlamydophila, mycoplasma, legionella
