Methacoline challenge
test when you suspect asthma but patient hasn’t presented with symptoms of asthma
The subject inhales a nebulized solution containing methacholine or histamine- cause bronchial smooth muscle constriction in asthmatic patients at much lower doses than in nonasthmatics.
what is a positive for methacoline test?
Test is positive: FEV1 falls by >20% at a dose of 16 mg/mL or less
what is a cardiopulmonary exercise test?
what is monitored?
test to check for unexplained exertional dyspnea
Minute ventilation, expired oxygen and carbon dioxide tension, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate are monitored
what is oximetry?
monitoring hemoglobin saturation with oxygen.
what is Arterial Blood Gas?
whenever a clinically important acid-base disturbance, hypoxemia, or hypercapnia is suspected.
what is a Thoracocentesis?
when is it done?
aspiration of fluid from the pleural space by percutaneous insertion of a small bore needle or catheter through the chest wall
you do it if it is exudate, never transudate
what complications can arise from a thoracocentesis?
