Examination of the neck
What are the 3 sections of the examination of the neck
- Assess the tracheal position
- Measure the crico-sternal distance
- Check lymph nodes
What can be said for the assessment of the tracheal position?
- Central position
What could be said fo the measurement of the crico-sternal distance?
Normal crico-sternal distance
What comes after the examination of the head and neck?
The examination of the back or front of chest (doesn’t really matter which one)
Describe the sections of the examination of the front and back of the chest?
- Inspection
- Palpation
- Percussion
- Auscultation
Describe what could be said for the insepection of the front or back of the chest?
- No scars
- No chest wall deformities
- Assymetry
- Skin leisons
- Dilated veins
- No pacemaker
Describe the palpation of the front of the chest
- Check Tracheal position of not done so already
- Find apex beat
- Measure chest expansion
Where is the apex beat supposed to be?
- 5th intercostal space in the midclavicular line
Describe the percussion of the chest
Percuss 5 areas:
- Apices
- Upper
- Middle
- Lower zones
- Axilla (mid-axillary line)
What is said to be ‘normal’ percussion
- Symmetrical resonant percussion
What is said to be ‘normal’ ausculation?
- Symmetrical vesicular breathing
What are the 2 parts of auscultation?
Auscultation and vocal resonance
