Respiratory Disorders Flashcards
what is FEV1?
forced expiratory volume in 1 second
what is FVC?
forced vital capacity
what is spirometry?
uses spirometer to objectively assess and individuals pulmonary performance
obstructive lung disease
the inability to get air out of the lung
this is asthma and COPD
FEV1/FVC is decreased
restrictive lung disease
the inability to get air into the lung and maintain normal lung volumes
FEV1/FVC is normal or increased
FVC low
how can you tell if symptoms are reversible?
an increase of FEV1 of 12% (>0.2L in adults) after an inhaled beta 2 agonist
how do you record peak expiratory flow rate?
take 3 readings each time and record the best one
what is carbon monoxide diffusing capacity?
measures the ability of carbon monixide to diffuse across the alveolar-capillary membrane
what is an issue with pulse oximetry?
cant tell the difference between CO2 and O2 bound to hemoglobin
