Respiratory Diseases and Conditions Flashcards
COPD
umbrella term for progessive diseases
bronchioles become filmsy, alveoli burst = not enough gas exchange
Symptoms - SOB, coughing, tightness in chest, wheezing
Treatment for COPD
more O2 (nasal cannula), puffer, controller med (to help with inflammation)
Asthma
certain triggers - brionchioles narrow
extra mucus due to swelling
hard to breathe
Asthma treatments
puffer - has a steriod that reduces swelling when inhaled
Emphysema
form of COPD
destroys alveo
SOB, cyanosis (not enough O2),
Treatments of emphysema
more O2, puffer, or surgert bc dead tissue in bdy = germs
Pneumonia
bacterial infection in the alveoli + grows in too
wet cough (mucus), fever general fatigue,
Treatment for pneumonia
anti-biotics, put in prone to help, pts can die from drowning in own mucus
Bronchitis (chronic)
form of COPD, like asthma but constant, treated with puffers, caused by environmental factors
Tuberculosis
Bacterial infection - bactera grows inside alveoli (bursts capillaries) - aggitates mucus w/ blood
coughing, extreme weight loss, fever, night fever, SOB
airborne
Treatments of TB
anti-biotics, but it takes YEARS to get rid of it
Influenza
gets into alveoli + virus replicates flu
Gains entry to blood stream via capillaries
alveoli burst a bit
causes fever, cough, runny nose, extreme fatigue, SOB, body aches (gets into muscle cells)
Influenza Treatment
droplet contact
no treatment
Tamaflu to reduce days
virus mutates every year
