Tachypnea
rapid breathing (<24 per minute)
Due to fever, exercise, pain, hypoxemis (lack of O2)
Bradypnea
slow breathing (less than 12 per min)
OD, nervous system disorder
Apnea
No Breathing
Hypoventilation
R is slow, shallow, and irregular
lung disorders affecting alveoli (pneumonia), obesity, side effect of drug
Hyperventilation
R is rapid and deep
Asthma, infection, emphysema, hypoxia, pain, anxiety
Dyspnea
difficulty breathing, SOB, painful
heart disease, excersise, and anxiety
Cheyne-stokes
R gradually increase in depth and rate (rapid and deep), then shallow and slow, then apnea for 10-20 seconds
Death is near
OD, cardiac arrest, renal failure, and brain disorders
Orthopnea
dyspnea only when laying flat
Asthma, emphysema, pneumonia
Biot’s Respiration
Rapid and deep respirations followed by 10-30 s of apnea
Kussmaul’s Respiration
deep and rapid
diabetic coma
breath smells sweet
