What does the respiratory control centre control?
The basic rhythm of breathing and pulmonary ventilation
What are the two areas of the respiratory control centre?
Inspiratory centre and expiratory centre

What is the inspiratory centre responsible for at rest?
The rhythmic cycle of inspiration and expiration
At rest, where does the inspiratory centre send impulses to?
The respiratory muscles (diaphragm and external intercostals)
Why is the expiratory centre inactive at rest?
Expiration is passive
What nerve goes to the intercostal muscles?
The intercostal nerve
What nerve goes to the diaphragm?
The phrenic nerve
What increases during exercise in relation to breathing?
Pulmonary ventilation

What does the inspiratory centre do during exercise?
Increases the stimulation of respiratory muscles with the addition of additional inspiratory muscles

Sternocleidomastoid
Scalenes
Pectoralis major
What does the expiratory centre stimulate during exercise?
The expiratory muscles
What are the expiratory muscles stimulated during exercise?
Internal intercostals

What receptors are found in the lungs, what do they detect?
Stretch receptors
They detect an increase in stretching/expansion in the lungs
