Respiratory Assessment Flashcards
What are the six components of the respiratory assessment?
Rate, Rhythm, Effort, Skin, Sound and Speech
What respiratory rate is normal?
12 to 18 breaths per minute
Signs of increased WOB?
Intercostal retraction, nasal flaring, forward/tripod posturing, paradoxical respiration, anxiety/agitation
What is HYPOXIA?
Decreased levels of oxygen in the tissues
What is HYPOXEMIA?
Decreased levels of oxygen in arterial blood
What is CYANOSIS?
Bluish discolouration of skin and mucous membrane
Indications for suctioning?
Airway secretions/debris that are unable to be spontaneously cleared
Contraindications for suctioning?
Nil in this setting
Precautions of suctioning?
Hypoxia, airway trauma, can stimulate coughing or gagging, vagal stimulation
Indications for BVM?
Acute respiratory distress, hypoventilation (RR less than 10/min), arrest requiring positive pressure ventilation
Contraindications for BVM?
Spontaneously breathing patients with adequate tidal volume and RR
Precautions for BVM?
Gastric inflammation, pulmonary barotrauma, undesirable cardiovascular effects such as hypotension
Indications for OPA?
Maintain airway patency, bite block in advanced airways
Contraindications for OPA?
Conscious patients and patients with an intact gag reflex
Precautions for OPA?
Airway trauma for incorrect OPA placement, intolerance, vomiting/aspiration, incorrect size or placement can exacerbate an airway obstruction
