Cardiovascular Assessment Flashcards
What are the six components of Cardiovascular Assessment?
Pulse, Blood Pressure, ECG, BGL, SPO2 and Temperature
What is the description for Bradycardia?
BPM less than 60
Causes of Bradycardia?
Fitness, sleep, MI, drugs, hypothermia, raised ICP
What is the description for Tachycardia?
BPM greater than 100
Causes of Tachycardia?
Exercise, anxiety, infection, drugs, MI
What is the systolic pressure?
The pressure in the blood vessels during contraction
What is diastolic pressure?
The pressure in the blood vessels during rest
Normal range of systolic?
100-140mmHG
Normal range for diastolic?
70-70mmHG
What is hypotension?
Low blood pressure
What is hypertension?
High blood pressure
Causes of hypotension?
Drugs, cardiac complications, hypovolaemia, dehydration , pregnancy
Causes of hypertension
Obesity, stress/anxiety, diabetes, drugs, excessive sodium consumption
Indications for NIBP?
To determine a patient’s blood pressure
Contraindications for NIBP?
Do not apply to a limb with an AV fistula, significant injury or burn or the arm that’s had a recent lymph node removal post mastectomy
Precautions for NIBP?
Patient discomfort/pain, excessive movement with result in an inaccurate reading, incorrect size or placement will result in an inaccurate reading
What is a normal BGL reading?
4 to 8mmol
What is hypoglycaemia and its causes?
Low glucose levels and can be caused by fasting, drugs (insulin and alcohol) and extreme exercise
What is hyperglycaemia and its causes?
High glucose levels and it can be caused by insulin deficiency, infection, diabetes, food and drink intake
Contraindication for BGL?
Not screened in newborns unless clinically indicated
Precautions for BGL?
Nil in this setting
Contraindications for SPO2?
Nil in this setting
Precautions for SPO02?
The reliability depends on correct sensor size and placement and adequate arterial blood pulsation and inaccurate reading may occur with excessive patient movement, exposure to ambient light, dirt or nail polish, carbon monoxide
What does FEBRILE mean?
Having or showing signs of a fever
What does AFEBRILE mean?
Not marked by or having a fever
Contraindications for tympanic thermometer?
Blood or drainage in the ear canal, acute or chronic inflammatory conditions in the external ear canal and perforated tympanic membrane/s
