Respiratory Alkalosis Flashcards

Q

Respiratory Alkalosis

A

Common Causes:

  • Anxiety leading to Hyperventilation
  • PE
  • Salicylate poisoning
  • CNS disorders: Stroke, SAH, Encephalitis
  • Altitude
  • Pregnancy

NB Anxiety should not lead to a decreased PO2! Whereas PE you would see hypoxia - how to differentiate

Salicylate OD tends to lead to a mixed respiratory alkalosis and metabolic acidosis.

Early stimulation of respiratory centre leads to respiratory alkalosis whilst later the direct acid effects of salicylates (combined with ARF) may lead to acidosis
