What is acute bronchitis? What does it cause?
It is the inflammation of the bronchi. Mucus production is increased, which stimulates the cough relfex.

What are the signs and symptoms of acute bronchitis?
Non productive cough in the beginning, then will change to productive cough
Substernal chest pain (from continuous coughing)
Fever
Malaise

Chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia

How is acute bronchitis treated?
- Increased fluid intake (to help liquify mucus)
- Rest is encouraged when feeling tired
- Expectorant (prescribed in the day)
- Suppressant (prescribed at night)

What are some examples of expectorants?
- Guaifenesin (Mucinex, Robitussin)

What are some adverse effects of guanifensin?
Drowsiness
