Respiratory Flashcards
Explain closed pneumothorax
Air leaking into pleural space from leak in lung.
Air can move both in and out from pleural space.
What are common causes of upper airway disease
Foreign body
Brachy
Lesion or mass
Trauma
Name physical signs of dyspnoea
Panting Elbows out Extended neck Strained neck Smiling Increased abdominal movements
What is the general approach with resp conditions
Provide oxygen
Low stress handling or sedate
Stage procedures
What is one observation that clearly defines distress of upper airway
Audible noise
What anatomy is classed as lower airway ?
Trachea
Lungs
Diaphragm
What will you see in a physical exam of lower airway disease
Increased expiration effort
Whezzle or crackle when listening to lungs
Cough
Fast shallow breath
Does upper airway disease have noise on inspiration or expiration?
Inspiration
Explain tension pneumothorax
Air is leaking into the pleural space from from either inside the lung or from a breach in the chea at wall to the environment. Air only moves in one direction, into pleural space so it fills up to restrict lung capacity
Explain pleural effusion
Fluid in pleural space
Common cause of lower airway disease
Feline asthma
Smoke inhalation
Pulmonary edema
Pleural space disease
When should you not sedate a respiratory distressed animal?
If they have stridor (noise)
What is one way other than oxygen that can aid a resp distress patient
Sedation to lessen stress
What diagnostics can be used for resp emergencies
ABCS
MBS
Auscultation of lungs
X-RAY
What does cyanotic membranes mean?
Blueish gums
Poor oxygenation due to deoxygenated RBC
