What is Pulmanary Ventilation (breathing)?

Process by which air is transported into and out of the lungs, and it can be considered to have two phases.

Inspiration and Expiration

What is Inspiration?
A
Process of breathing in.

What happens during Inspiration?
A
1) Intercostal muscles between the ribs contract to lift the ribs upwards and outwards.
2) the diaphragm is forced downwards

What is Expiration?
A
Process of breathing out

What happens during Expiration?
A
1) Intercostal muscles relax. Causing the ribs to move downwards and inwards.
2) The diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards.
