respiratory Flashcards
brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome
obstrucrion generally due to anatomical abnormalities, includes narrowing of the nostril aperture, elongated soft palate, and inverted laryngeal saccules
folding flap palatoplasty
performed to treat elongated soft palate. involves removing a thick portion of the palate to treat excessive thickness and length.
pre-op for FFP
patients already have resp difficulties, so handle gently to avoid stress. MUST be preoxygenated. induction and tubing must be swift and prompt. ET tube tied to the lower jaw. vet should inspect the larynx for laryngeal collapse.
prep for FFP
pharynx packed with swabs. pharynx flushed with chlorhex 0.05% with head placed lower than body.
positioning for FFP
sternal recumbency. mouth secured open. chin on well padded surface. mandible secured.
instruments and materials for FFP
general kit. electrocautery unit. swaged on absorbable monofilament.
post op for FFP
close observations for respiratory difficulty. patient in sternal recumbency to maximise respiration.
stenotic nares
narrowing of the nares
