Common Cold AKA Nasopharyngitis
A
No antibiotics
Resolves in 7-10 days
Goal is to treat symptoms and prevent spread

Bronchiolitis
A
- Causes necrosis of the respiratory epithelium and plugs lumens with mucus causing obstructions.
- Limits exhalation causing hyperinflation
- Causes hypoxemia, CO2 retention, altered ABGs
- Observe closely for changes. Deteriorate fast

Pneumonia
Types:
Aspiration, Viral, Bacterial
Can lead to:
Empyema, sepsis, plural effusion, pneumothorax, dehydration

- Often secondary to influenza
- Inflammation of the pulmonary parenchyma
- Caused by inhalation or comes from the blood stream
- Mostly viral and community aquired
- often associated with chronic lung disease
- Pain may present in abdomen with younger kids

Symptoms of Pneumonia
A
clubbing, stridor, retractions, anxiety, congestion, flat or dull on percussion (not reliable with infant), non productive cough

- chronic and leading cause of hospitalization in kids

A
O2, bronchodialators, antihystamine, epinephrine, iv mag sulphate
