- Immunodeficiency → HIV & hypogammaglobulinaemia
- Congenital → cystic fibrosis, Kartagener’s & yellow nail syndrome
- Mechanical → cancer, fibrosis (traction) & bronchial obstruction
- Autoimmune → rheumatoid arthritis & SLE
