Respiratory Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 components of the respiratory system?
A
- ventilation
- gas exchange
2
Q
What is needed for adequate ventilation?
A
- airway patency
- active muscles
3
Q
What is needed for adequate gas exchange?
A
- adequate number of alveoli
- no fibrosis of alveolar wall
4
Q
Why are both components of the respiratory system important to getting adequate oxygen into the blood?
A
- ventilation - if gas can’t get into the patient’s lungs then there is nothing to exchange
- gas exchange - gas needs to be exchanged between the lungs and the blood, adequate surface area required, area of exchange can’t be too thick
5
Q
What would fluid in the lungs appear as in an x-ray?
A
in an upright patient, any fluid in the lungs will collect at the bottom first and will appear whiter on x-rays
6
Q
How many lobes do the lungs have?
A
left lung - 2 lobes: superior, inferior
right lung - 3 lobes: superior, middle, inferior
