What is an empyema?
Pus in the pleural space
How does an empyema present?
Fever
Pleuritic chest pain
Worsening symptoms despite antibiotics
High CRP
Dropping albumin
What investigations should be done for an empyema?
- CXR
- USS if an effusion is seen on CXR
- Pleural tap
What result from the pleural tap identifies fluid as being an infection?
pH <7.2
How is an empyema managed?
Drainage
Regular flushes with saline
Antibiotics
