What does a pulse oximeter do?

A

It determines the percentage (%) of hemoglobin in the blood that is saturated with oxygen. It also takes the pulse rate.

  • Cyanosis (blue tinge to lips, face, skin)

What do you do if patient has decreased SpO2?

A
  • Eliminate any factors that may cause errors (pulse oximeter may not be on properly, patient might have nail polish on etc)
  • Sit patient upright
  • Ask to take deep breaths
  • Inform RN
