Recognize healthy body systems Flashcards
What is Physiology?
it’s the study of how the body & it’s parts work or function.
What is Anatomy?
- the study of the structure & shape of the human body
- body parts & their relationship with one another.
describe skeletal muscle?
it is striated (striped) & is under voluntary control
Describe Cardiac muscle?
- present only in the walls of the heart
- is striated (striped)
- is controlled by involuntary nerve messages from the brain.
describe Smooth muscle?
- responsible for movement of food through the digestive tract
- changes the diameter of blood vessels
what are Organs?
composed of 2 or more tissues that work together. eg: kidney
What is the cell compromised of?
- cell membrane which is the outer covering (think of M&Ms)
- encloses the cell & helps it hold its shape
What is the nucleus?
- the control centre
- directs cells activities
What is a cytoplasm?
- surrounds the nucleus (jelly stuff)
What are organelles?
- structures that are inside the cytoplasm
What are chromosomes?
- Thread like structures within the nucleus
How many chromosomes does each cell have?
46
What are chromosomes composed of?
Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen & trace elements
Name the 4 types of tissues
Epithelial - protection, skin
Connective - support, bones
Muscular - movement, skeletal
Nervous - communication, brain
REMEMBER:
E, C, M, N
Name 4 organs and their functions
Heart - circulation
Stomach - digestion
Brain - communication/coordination
Uterus - reproduction
REMEMBER: HSBU
