Respiration and gaseous exchange Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration is the buring of food to give energy.
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the use of oxygen which takes place in the mitochondria and uses large amounts of energy. Anaerobic respiration uses no oxygen and takes place in the cytoplasm, it uses small amounts of energy.
What is gaseous exchange and where does it take place in animals, plants and fishes?
Gaseous exchange is the process by which oxygen diffuses into an organsim and carbon dioxide diffuses out the organism through gaseous exchange surface. In animals this occurs in the lungs, in plants this occurs in the root, stem and leaves and in fishes it occurs in the gills.
What is oxygen debt and how do you repay it?
Oxygen debt is the build up of lactic acid in muscle cells which eventually collapses as they stop contracting. This debt must be repaid after exercise by resting and breathing deeply so that lactic acid can be respired aerobically.
Suggest one way in which the leaf is adapted for gaseous exchange and preventing water loss.
Gaseous exchange- in plants leaves are flat, broad which increases surface area and thin, which allows gaseous exchange quickly.
Waxy cuticle prevents water loss.
