Cells Flashcards
What are the differences in an animal and plant cell?
Large vacuole, chloroplast, cell wall, starch grains.
Define the organelles of a plant cell.
Cell wall gives the cell shape and protects the cell.
Cell membrane selectively allows substances to enter and leave cell.
Mitochondria is the site of respiration.
Chloroplast is the site of photosynthesis.
Large vacuole contains cell sap, stores cell waste and supports cell when turgid.
Nucleus contains chromosomes which carries genetic information in the form of DNA.
What is the importance of cell specialization in multicellular organisms?
It is important as the organism is large and therefore has many cells to carry out all essential life processes. Cells become specialized to carry out these specific functions.
What is diffusion, osmosis and active transport?
Diffusion is the movement of substances from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane.
Active transport is the movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane, from a region of low concentration to high concentration.
What is heterotrophic, autotrophic , saprophytic?
Heterotrophic is complex organic molecules into simpler ones.
Autotrophic is simple inorganic substances into complex organic substances.
Saprophytic is where organisms absorb nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter.
