Respiration And Gas Exchange Flashcards
What is inspiration
Breathing in
What is exportation
Breathing out
What are the three main gases in air that are taken in and removed from the body?
Nitrogen + carbon dioxide + Oxygen
What is gas exchange?
The swapping of gasses
What is the function of gas exchange?
Allows oxygen to travel into your cells whilst removing carbon dioxide
What does the trachea do?
also called the windpipe. This tube runs from the mouth, down the throat towards the lungs. It is lined with rings of cartilage which keep it open at all times.
What does the bronchus do?
The trachea splits into a left and right bronchus (plural: bronchi), each leads to a lung.
What does the bronchioles do?
Each bronchus splits again and again into thousands of smaller tubes called bronchioles which take the air deeper into the lungs.
What process occurs in all cells to release energy?
Respiration
Which process allows oxygen to travel from the alveoli to the blood
Diffusion
Where are oxygen molecules in the blood carried in?
Red blood cells
True or false? Breathing and ventilation are the same.
True
How many alveoli are found within the lungs?
Millions
What gas is diffused out of the blood and into the alveoli?
Carbon dioxide
Where in the lungs does oxygen diffuse into the blood from?
Alveoli
As air moves into the lungs, what does the diaphragm do?
It contracts and moves downwards
As air moves into the lungs, what do the intercostal muscles do?
They contract and move upwards
True or false? Breathing and respiration are the same.
False
