Respiration and enzymes mock Flashcards
What is an enzyme
A biological catalyst
Anaerobic respiration in humans
glucose → lactic acid
What is a catalyst
A catalyst is a chemical which increases the rate of a reaction without being used up itself in the reaction
Catalysts take part in the reaction but afterwards remain unchanged and so are free to catalyse more reactions.
Cells contain hundreds of different enzymes, each catalysing a different reactuon
Temperature - how does it affect the rate of reaction
As temperature increases, the enzyme and substrate have more kinetic energy
They move faster and so there are more successful collisions
At a too high temperature (or pH level) the active site changes shape so it is no longer complimentary to the substrate
the enzyme is denatured
Anaerobic respiration in plants / yeast
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide
Aerobic respiration equation
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
