Respiration and circulation Flashcards
How does the epiglottis aid respiration?
Open and closes the trap to stop the foreign objects entering the trachea
Explain how the air is exhaled from the lungs
Air is exhaled when the diagram contracts and the pressure is higher in the lungs
What type of blood does the arteries carry?
Oxygenated
What type of blood do the veins carry?
Deoxygenated
What are the 3 functions of blood?
Transport
Protect
Regulate
What is the main function of white blood cells?
To attack foreign bodies and material
What is the main function of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen around the body
What is the main difference between the structure of arteries and veins?
Arteries carry oxygenated blood around the body therefore the arteries are thicker walled and have a smaller hole to carry it at a higher pressure
Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the heart which is a smaller distance and therefore has thinner walls and a larger hole to carry it at a lower pressure
What does the left side of the heart do?
Pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs around the body
What does the right side of the heart do?
Takes the deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs
What is the primary function of the respiratory system?
To oxygenate cells and allow gas exchange between oxygen into cells and CO2 out of cells
