Evolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is evolution?
A
A process that results in heritable changes in a population spread over many generations
2
Q
What three things does evolution involve?
A
- change
- development
- growth
3
Q
What two things are not classed as evolution?
A
The development of an individual organism
Or
Ontogeny
4
Q
How does evolution work?
A
Starts with genetic mutation
Changes/mutations in genes lead to new forms of genes alleles
The new genes may become heritable traits
Genetic mutation can be caused by a range of factors including viruses, radiation or errors in DNA replication
5
Q
What 3 processes are thought to influence if a new trait will survive?
A
Natural selection
Genetic drift
Gene flow
6
Q
What is natural selection?
A
Described by Charles darwin The individual which produces successfully will pass on their inherited traits onto the next generation More likely to be passed on if: -Survives to breeding age -Breeds successfully -Produces a lot of offspring
