Respiration And Breathing Flashcards
What is the difference between respiration and breathing?
Breathing is the physical process of exchanging gases whilst respiration is the chemical process that produces energy
Describe the process of breathing
Just before we inhale the diaphragm is found in a dome shape and as we inhale it contracts and flattens the result of this change in shape is the change in the volume of the thorax. As the volume of the thorax increases the internal pressure drops. This means that the air pressure outside the lungs is greater than the air pressure inside the lungs.
Evaluate the bell jar model
The main tube that brings air in and out of the body represents the trachea
The tubes that take air in and out of the lungs represent the bronchus
The organs represented by balloons are lungs
The muscle represented by the rubber sheet is the diaphragm
The actual bell jar represents the rib cage
What is the composition of the inhaled and exhaled air in terms of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen?
Inhaled:
Oxygen - 20%
Carbon dioxide - 0.04%
Nitrogen - 79%
Exhaled:
Oxygen - 16%
Carbon Dioxide - 4%
Nitrogen - 79%
What is the word equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
What are the structures of the thorax involved in breathing, including: trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, ribs, diaphragm, intercostal muscles

What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and fungi?
Glucose —> carbon dioxide + ethanol + energy
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals?
Glucose —> lactic acid + energy
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without the presence of oxygen
What is aerobic respiration?
A chemical process which contains oxygen and glucose
