Respiration And Breathing Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
The chemical reactions that release energy
What is the type of sugar called that is used to store energy?
Glucose
Oxygen+ glucose produces what?
Carbon dioxide + water
Word equation for combustion
Oxygen+glucose = carbon dioxide+ water
Breathing definition
When muscles between the ribs and in the diaphragm change the size of the lungs
What is the name for the movement of air in and out the lungs?
Ventilation
What is mucus?
Sticky liquid that traps dirt, dust and microorganisms.
What is gas exchange?
The swapping of gases when oxygen from the air enters the lungs and carbon dioxide also enters the air in the lungs
What is diffusion?
Overall movement of particles from a place with a lot of them to a place with fewer.
What does oxygen do when it gets into the blood?
Enters bred blood cells and sticks to molecules of haemoglobin (changes colour of cell)
What do the arteries do?
Pump blood from the heart around the body
What is anaerobic respiration?
Type of respiration which cells can break down sugars to generate energy in the absence of oxygen (doesn’t need oxygen)
