Respiration Flashcards
Cellular respiration?
Exothermic reaction that occurs continuously in living cells
Summary (equation) for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen - carbon duo mixes and water
What do you muscles store glucose as?
Carbohydrate glycogen
During exercise..?
- Glycogen stores in the muscles are converted to glucose for cellular respiration.
- Increase in heart rate and breathing rate and breathing volume
- Flow of oxygenated blood to muscles increases
D. Anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen.
What is glucose broken down into in anaerobic respiration?
(Incompletely) lactic acidosis
After working for a long time, muscles….
Become fatigued and don’t contract efficiently, if oxygen limited = anaerobic respiration.
D. Oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen that must be taken into the body after exercise has stopped to complete the breakdown of lactic acid.
What does metabolism include?
- Conversion of glucose - starch
- Glycogen - cellulose
- Formation of lipid molecules
- Use of glucose and nitrate ions to make amino acids (used to synthesis proteins and break down excess proteins into urea)
Where is lactic acid converted into glucose?
The liver
