Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
- A chemical reaction that takes place in all living cells
- GLUCOSE reacts with OXYGEN to produce CARBON DIOXIDE and WATER and stored chemical energy is released
- OXYGEN is involved in aerobic respiration so OXYGEN DEPT is created
What is anaerobic respiration?
- During this, GLUCOSE is broken down into a substance called LACTIC ACID
- Some energy is released WITHOUT OXYGEN
- It can only be performed for a short period of time
What is the formula for aerobic respiration?
GLUCOSE + OXYGEN = CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + CHEMICAL ENERGY
What is the formula for anaerobic respiration?
GLUCOSE - LACTIC ACID + ENERGY
What is oxygen dept?
OXYGEN DEPT is created when oxygen is used in AEROBIC respiration. Muscles get ENERGY from GLUCOSE by PAYING for it with OXYGEN.
How is oxygen dept payed back?
After you have a recovery period from exercise, is when oxygen is received again.
What is the formula for aerobic respiration in plants?
GLUCOSE- CARBON DIOXIDE + ETHANOL + ENERGY
Is fermentation an aerobic or anaerobic process?
Anaerobic process
List 3 useful fermentation products.
Vinegar Beer Olives Cheese Yogurt Hand sanitiser
Which sugar do you think will have the best effect on fermentation and why?
- fruit juice
- sucrose
- sweetener
Fruit juice because it has a faster effect
Aerobic respiration uses oxygen but releases energy slowly, more of it and creates oxygen dept. Produces carbon dioxide.
Anaerobic respiration only uses glucose and produces lactic acid and less energy but quickly.
What are consequences for not paying oxygen dept?
Oxygen is needed to get rid of lactic acid in respiration ( which is poisonous ) if you don’t pay it of it could damage the respiratory system.
