Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is aerobic respiration?

A
  • A chemical reaction that takes place in all living cells
  • GLUCOSE reacts with OXYGEN to produce CARBON DIOXIDE and WATER and stored chemical energy is released
  • OXYGEN is involved in aerobic respiration so OXYGEN DEPT is created

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A
  • During this, GLUCOSE is broken down into a substance called LACTIC ACID
  • Some energy is released WITHOUT OXYGEN
  • It can only be performed for a short period of time

Q

What is oxygen dept?

A

OXYGEN DEPT is created when oxygen is used in AEROBIC respiration. Muscles get ENERGY from GLUCOSE by PAYING for it with OXYGEN.

Q

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen but releases energy slowly, more of it and creates oxygen dept. Produces carbon dioxide.

A

Anaerobic respiration only uses glucose and produces lactic acid and less energy but quickly.

Q

What are consequences for not paying oxygen dept?

A

Oxygen is needed to get rid of lactic acid in respiration ( which is poisonous ) if you don’t pay it of it could damage the respiratory system.
