Exploring The Human Skeleton Flashcards
How is calcium is important for bones?
Without calcium, bones become bendy. It’s needed for muscle contraction and for blood clotting.
List the 4 main roles of the human skeleton
- Supports the body
- Protects the organs
- Allows movement
- Produces blood cells
Name the bones of the human skeleton:
- there are 14
Crainium/ skull Mandible/ jaw Collarbone Scapular/ shoulder blade Sternum Ribs Humorous Spine/ vertebrae Radius Ulnar Pelvis Femur Tibla Fibula
List three parts of the bone structure:
Spongy bone
Compact bone
Yellow marrow
List ways to measure height:
The measurement of your arm span
Length of femur x 2.6 + 0.65
Length of humerus x 3.06 + 0.62
What is the Ball and Socket?
Give an example
Allows forward, backward and circular movement e.g shoulder
What is the Hinge joint?
Give an example
Allows movement like closing and opening a door e.g the elbow
What is the Pivot joint?
Give an example
The top of your neck so you can move your head from side to side
What are tendons?
Bones are held to muscles by tendons
What are ligaments?
Bones are connected by ligaments
List 4 parts of the joint
Ligament
Cartilage
Bone
Synovial fluid
What is cartilage?
Flexible tissue that keeps joint motion fluid and cushions the bones against impact.
What is the skeletal system made up of?
Bones Muscles Tendons Ligaments Cartilage
What is arthritis?
Condition that affects joints and can be very painful.
Cartilage and bones rub together and may eventually rub away- if so then it would be replaced with an artificial joint.
What is osteoporosis?
A condition when bone density decreases and bones become fragile making them prone to fractures.
