Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is the definition of respiration?

A
  • Respiration is the chemical process by which living organisms release energy (in the form of ATP) from organic food molecules (such as glucose).

Q

What does the lactic acid do to your muscles?

A
  • Lactic acid alters the pH of cells and starts to denature proteins, especially muscle proteins.
  • You experience a burning sensation and eventually cramp as lactic acid builds up.

Q

How is oxygen debt prevented?

A
  • Lactic acid is removed from muscle cells and transported to the liver.
  • Here it is re-combined with oxygen and broken down.
  • The breakdown process won’t take place until there is sufficient oxygen in the system, usually once exercise has finished.
  • Pulse rate and breathing rate remain high after exercise in order to supply this oxygen – we call this “repaying the oxygen debt”.
