Respiration Flashcards
Where does glycolysis occur?
In the cytoplasm
What occurs in glycolysis?
Phosphorylation of glucose
Splits to 2 molecules of TP
Oxidation of TP to form 2 molecules of pyruvate and 2 molecules of ATP
What occurs in the link reaction?
Pyruvate is oxidised to acetate - forming reduced NAD
2-carbon acetate combines with coenzyme A to form acetylcoenzymeA
What occurs in the krebs cycle?
AcetylcoenzymeA combined with a 4C molecule to form a 6C molecule
6C molecule loses CO2 and H to form ATP and a 4C molecule
4C molecule can now bind with acetylcoenzymeA again
Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur?
In the mitochondria
What occurs in oxidative phosphorylation?
Hydrogens reduce NAD AND FAD
electrons pass along electron transfer chain releasing energy
Energy is for active transport of protons across membrane
Protons diffuse into mitochondrial matrix through ATP synthase channels
How does lipid respiration work?
Lipids hydrolysed to glycerol and fatty acids.
Glycerol is phosphorylated and converted to TP
Glycolysis occurs
How does protein respiration occur?
Protein is hydrolysed to amino acids which enter the respiratory pathway
Anaerobic respiration in plants and micro-organisms
Pyruvate + reduced NAD forms ethanol + co2 + oxidised NAD
Process of anaerobic respiration in animals
Pyruvate takes up 2 hydrogen atoms from reduced NAD to form lactate
