Respiration Flashcards
respiration…
you need energy to keep your body going. Energy comes from food and its released by respiration
where does respiration occur
in every cell in your body
how is energy released in respiration
as chemical energy and heat
what is the chemical energy released in repisration used for
to do things like create large molecules from smaller ones (e.g. proteins from amino acids) and contract musecles
what is heat energy released in repsiration used for
helps maintan a steady body temp
aerobic word eq
glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water
aerobic symbol eq
C6H1206 + 602 ——-> 6C02 + 6H20
anaerobic respiration word eq (in animals)
glucose —–> lactic acid (+energy)
anerobic respiration word eq (in plants/fungi)
glucose —–> ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ energy)
aerobic respiration info
1) occurs when there is plenty of oxygen avalibale
2) most effieicnt way to release energy from glucose
3) most frequent type of respiration
anaerobic respiration info
1) when you do vigrorous excersize, your body can’t supply enough oxygen to your muscles for aerobic respiration- even though your heart rate and breathing rate increase as much as they can, your muscles have to start respiring anaerobically as well
2) It is not the best way to convert glucose into energy because it releases much less energy than aerobic respiration, glucose is only partially broken down and lactic acid is produced
3) the lactic acid builds up in ,uscles- it gets painful and leds to cramp
