Respiration Flashcards
what is repsiration
the process of transferring energy from the breakdown of organic compounds (usually glucose)
what are the 3 things respiration is responsible for in the body
- metabolic processes (making larger molecules from smaller ones)
- contracting muscles
- maintaining a steady body temperature
what type of reaction is respiration and why
- exothermic
- because energy is transferred to the environment (some by heat)
what are the two types of respiration
aerobic and anaerobic
what is aerobic respiration
the type or respiration that happens when plenty of oxygen is available
why do our bodies prefer to use aerobic over anaerobic respiration
because its the most efficient way to transfer energy to glucose
what is the equation for aerobic respiration
- glucose + oxygen = water + carbon dioxide + energy
- C6H12O6 + 602 = 6CO2 + 6H20
fondly enough, what is the aerobic respiration question a reverse of
the photosynthesis equation
when does your body use anaerobic respiration
when you do vigorous exercise to the point where your body cant supply oxygen to your muscles for aerobic respiration
what does anaerobic respiration transfer in comparison to aerobic respiration and what it mean in terms of its efficiency
- much less energy than aerobic respiration
- so its much less efficient
what type of respiration is lactic acid produced during and why is it produced
- during anaerobic respiration
- made because glucose is only partially broken down so lactic acid is produced
what does lactic acid do to muscles
- it builds up in them
- build up gets painful which leads to a cramp
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals
glucose = lactic acid + energy
what do plants produce when they anaerobically respire
ethanol and CO2 instead of lactic acid
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants
glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
