Respiration Flashcards
They both happen in the..
Mitohondria
When do living things respire
All of the time
What type of reaction is aerobic resp
Exothermic so they can continuously release energy
Formula for aerobic resp
Oxygen + Glucose -> (energy) + carbon dioxide + water
Exothermic reaction
Gives out energy
Endothermic reaction
Takes in energy
What is aerobic resp
When oxygen diffuses from alveoli into bloodstream
Glucose diffuses out of small intestine into digestive system and into capillaries in bloodstream and then into respiring cells.
Carbon dioxide is waste product of diffusion and goes out of cells into bloodstream and then into alveoli to be breathed out of the body
Cardiac output
Volume of blood circulated by heart per min
Stroke volume
Volume of blood pump per beat
Cardiac output equation
Cardiac output = stroke vol x heart rate
Cm3/min Cm3 bpm
What happens when we reach max breathing rate and cardiac output
We cant supply oxygen any quicker so cant release more energy in aerobic resp. Therefore we begin to respire anaerobically
What is EPOC
The extra oxygen needed to break down lactic acid after anaerobic resp. Its called the “excess post exercise oxygen consumption”
