Hormones Flashcards
Define the term “hormone”
Hormones are chemical messages produced by endocrine glands and are released directly into the blood
Name 1 hormone produced in the ovaries
Estrogen
Name 1 hormone produced in the pancreas
Insuline
Name the endocrine gland that produces the growth hormone
The pituarity gland
Name a target organ of growth hormones
The brain and the muscles
How does the growth hormone reach its target organ
Travels through the blood stream
Define the term “metabolic rate”
The rate at which you convert the energy stored in food to your body
What is thyroxine
The hormone made in the thyroid gland
What are the effects of thyroxine
Causes heart cells to contract more and causes proteins and carbohydrates to break down more quickly
What does thyroxine increase
Metabolic rate
How is the release of thyroxine controlled
The amount of thyroxine released by the thyroid gland is controlled by other hormones. This is an example of negative feedback
What does low levels of thyroxine do
It stimulates TRH production in the hypothalamus and cause the pituitary gland to release TSH
What does TRH stand for
Thyrotopin-releasing hormone
What does TSH stand for
Thyroid-stimulating hormone
