Respiration Flashcards
What is breathing?
Breathing is when you inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide and water vapour
Describe the process of respiration
Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens in all living cells. Itβs the way energy is released from glucose. Itβs not the same as breathing.
Name the parts of the respiratory system.
Nasal cavity, pleural cavity, lungs (right & left), trachea, bronchus (right & left), ribs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm, bronchiole, alveoli
How is gas exchanged in the lungs?
The alveoli are adapted to make gas exchange happen easily. They give the lungs really big surface area and move gases around the body.
When and how does anaerobic respiration take place?
The glucose and oxygen react together in the cells when there is not enough oxygen to completely break down glucose for your energy needs. When you exercise vigorously you force your muscles to work harder, until they reach the point where your lungs can no longer supply sufficient oxygen.
What are the parts of the circulatory system?
Heart, blood vessels and blood itself
