Q

What is aerobic respiration?

A

respiration that uses oxygen and glucose, releases energy, water and carbon dioxide

takes place continuously in plants and animals

most of the reaction take place in mitochondria

Q

What are the uses of energy?

A

build larger molecules from smaller ones

(in animals) muscles to contract

(in mammals) maintain a steady body temperature

(in plants) build up sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids, which then create proteins

Q

What are the changes that take place during exercise?

A

heart rate and the rate and depth of breathing increase

this increase the blood flow to the muscles, increase the supply of glucose and oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide

muscles use glycogen (stored glucose) during exercise, as it is converted back to glucose

Q

What happens if there is insufficient oxygen during exercise?

A

then anaerobic respiration will occur to obtain energy

anaerobic respiration is the incomplete breakdown of glucose, it causes lactic acid to be released

Q

What are the problems with anaerobic respiration?

A

much less energy is released as it is incomplete

results in oxygen debt that has to be repaid in order to oxidase lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water

a build up of lactic acid in muscles causes fatigue

lactic acid is removed by blood flow
