Organs Flashcards
Why do complex organism have organs?
multicellular organism develop systems for exchanging materials
during the development of a multicellular organism cells differentiate so they can perform different functions
What is a tissue group?
a group of cells with similar structure and function
examples:
- muscular tissue - can contract to move
- glandular tissue - can produce enzymes and hormones
- epithelial tissue which covers some parts of the body
What are organs made from and what are their functions in the stomach?
organs are made out of tissue
some may consist of several tissues
the stomach contains:
- muscular tissue - churn food
- glandular - produce digestive juices
- epithelial - to cover outside of the stomach
What are organ systems?
groups of organ that perform a particular substance
Describe the different organs involved in digestion
glands, e.g. salivary gland, produce digestive juices
stomach churns and breaks down food
liver produces bile - neutralises acid
small intestine - where absorption of soluble food occurs
large intestine - where water is absorbed from undigested food, producing faeces
What are the organs in the plant?
stem
roots
leaf
What are the tissues in a plant?
epidermal - covers the plant
mesophyll - carries out photosynthesis
xylem and phloem - transport substances around the plant
what are the different features of a leaf?
chlorophyll and a large surface area to absorb light
stomata to allow CO2 to diffuse into the leaf
think so there is a short distance for CO2 too diffuse into the cells
veins support the leaf and transport water and carbs
What is the internal structure of a leaf?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/staticarchive/9c9f1c0fcecbcb605b7fd4a72bdad6b42cd14e15.gif
waxy, thin cuticle - protect leaf, allows light through
thin, transparent epidermis - to allow light to reach the palisade cells
layer of palisade cells on the surface - absorb light
spongy mesophyll - allow spaces for carbon dioxide to diffuse through the leaf, large surface area
